Luke Reading (#8)

Take a few minutes to catch up and pray that God would bless you through the reading of His word.

Read Luke 3:23-38

Observation

  • How old was Jesus when he began his public ministry?
  • How does Luke describe Jesus’ relationship to Joseph?
  • Are there any names that are familiar to you in this genealogy? How far back does Luke trace Jesus’ ancestry?

Interpretation

  • Why is it important for Luke to mention that Jesus was “supposed” to be the son of Joseph?
  • Why is it significant that Jesus is descended from:
    • David? (cf. II Samuel 7:14-16, Mark 12:35-37, Revelation 22:17)
    • Abraham? (cf. Genesis 12:1-7, Genesis 22:18, Galatians 3:16-18)
    • Adam?
      • What does it mean that Adam is the “son of God” (v. 38)?
      • How do you expect a son to relate to his Father? Was Adam an obedient son?
      • Israel is also called God’s son (Ex 4:22). Was the nation of Israel a good and faithful son?
      • What kind of son was Jesus (Luke 3:22)?

Application

  • Read Romans 5:12-21. How does being in the spiritual genealogy of Jesus set you free from your sins?
  • How should you live differently today since you are “in Christ” instead of “in Adam”?
